🎥 Self-tape required to apply Scene 6 · Melanated ChristmasYour lines are highlighted
Scene 6 INT. MIA'S PARENTS' KITCHEN - LATER
The after-dinner hum. Pots soaking. Pie half-cut. Voices and laughter carry faintly from the other room. Nadia wraps leftovers at the counter while Mia lines containers up in perfect rows.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
You don't have to organize the leftovers like they're boarding a flight.
MIA BROOKS
Yes, I do. Y'all live reckless.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(smirking)
Mm-hmm.
A beat. Mia glances through the doorway. In the living room, MOTHER leans into FATHER on the sofa while STEVEN untangles a strand of lights one of the kids must've pulled loose. Nadia follows Mia's eyeline.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(gently)
You okay?
MIA BROOKS
I'm fine.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
That wasn't my question.
Mia keeps snapping lids onto containers. One too hard.
MIA BROOKS
(shrugs)
It's just... this house always feels the same.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
That's called stability, sister.
MIA BROOKS
(half-laugh)
Must be nice.
Nadia studies her now. Softer.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
You wanted that once.
Mia doesn't answer right away. Which is answer enough.
MIA BROOKS
I thought I would've had more of a life by now. Not just a schedule. Not just invoices and bookings and everybody else getting their beautiful moment on time.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(quietly)
Mia.
MIA BROOKS
And before you say anything, I know how that sounds. I'm grateful. I built something. I'm proud of it.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
Both can be true.
MIA BROOKS
(low)
I look around in here and everybody's got somebody. Mama and Daddy. You and Steven. Even the arguments feel paired up.
Nadia laughs.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
That is a very specific kind of lonely.
MIA BROOKS
I'm not lonely.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(a look)
Okay.
MIA BROOKS
I mean... I don't have time to be. That's the point. And these men?
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
Here we go.
MIA BROOKS
No, be serious. Everybody wants access, attention, something casual, something convenient. Nobody is trying to build anything real. And I do not have the bandwidth to raise a grown man into emotional honesty. Jesus knows I don't have time for that.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
Fair.
MIA BROOKS
(faster now)
I am so busy. Genuinely busy. This season alone has me booked, and if I let myself get distracted every time somebody says I work too much and smiles nice, then what?
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
Then maybe you'd have one dinner and see if he can spell your middle name.
MIA BROOKS
Nadia.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(softening)
I'm not saying go chase a man. I'm saying you keep talking like love is some poorly timed inconvenience.
Mia looks away. That one got through.
MIA BROOKS
That's not what I said.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
No. It's how you live.
A small silence. Warm voices from the other room. The clink of ice in a glass. Somebody starts humming along with the music.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(gentle)
You don't only deserve a successful life, Mia. You deserve a shared one.
Mia looks down at the row of containers, suddenly very interested in making their edges line up.
MIA BROOKS
That sounds nice on a throw pillow.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(smiles)
See? Right there. Every time something gets close to the truth, you make it cute.
MIA BROOKS
(quietly)
Cute is efficient.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
Mm-hmm. Efficient is also lonely.
That lands. Mia doesn't argue this time.
MIA BROOKS
(after a beat)
I just don't know how people do all this and not lose themselves.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
The good version? You don't disappear. You decide who gets to stand beside you while the two of you are becoming one.
Mia absorbs that. From the living room, a burst of laughter. Then MELANIE BROOKS calls out from offscreen.
MELANIE BROOKS
(offscreen)
If y'all are back there having a therapy session, bring the pie with you.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(calling back)
We're coming.
Nadia nudges the pie server toward Mia.
NADIA BROOKS-COLEMAN
(softly)
Just... don't get so used to holding everything by yourself that you forget how to be held.
Mia meets her eyes. No comeback ready this time.
MIA BROOKS
(small)
I'll bring the pie.
Nadia takes that for what it is -- not agreement, but not nothing. Mia lifts the pie and heads for the living room, following the sound of her family's laughter.

About the project

Mia Brooks is a gifted, tightly controlled event planner who creates warmth and elegance for everyone but herself. As Christmas lights and community traditions fill the Eastside, Mia’s own apartment remains bare, reflecting how emotionally closed off she has become. In client meetings she is sharp, funny, and impeccably professional, but she shuts down even harmless flirtation and keeps real connection at arm’s length. At her office, her loyal friend Tiffany Hall notices the cracks beneath Mia’s polish, especially when Mia reacts to a call from Kevin Rush, a man who seems to represent an old pattern of disappointment and inconsistency. Tiffany also shares a rumor that the Eastside’s prestigious Melanated Christmas Ball may need a new planner. Though Mia is clearly intrigued, she doubts that talent alone is enough to gain entry into such a legacy event and worries she will never truly be trusted in those circles. Later, at her parents’ Christmas-filled home, Mia is surrounded by easy family love, ritual, and partnership. Watching her parents and her sister Nadia move through their relationships with comfort and familiarity forces Mia to confront what is missing in her own life. In a quiet kitchen conversation, she admits that despite her success, she expected to have built a fuller life by now, not just a flawless schedule. The excerpt ends with Mia exposed in her loneliness, setting up a story about ambition, belonging, and the possibility of love.
