Scene 3 INT. COMMUNITY ROOM - DAY
A small Eastside community room dressed in in-progress Christmas elegance -- swatches in jewel tones, gold ribbon, vendor sheets, a flyer for a holiday toy drive pinned beside a MELANATED CHRISTMAS BALL poster. Soft instrumental Christmas music hums somewhere in the background.
MIA BROOKS sits at a folding table turned command center. Legal pad open. Planner tabbed. Phone face down. She is polished, focused, and warm in the way professionals are when they know exactly what they are doing.
Across from her, a YOUNG WOMAN flips through sample menus, excited and a little overwhelmed. Her BROTHER leans nearby, watching with easy amusement.
MIA
If we move dessert service after remarks instead of before, your photos improve, the room stays cleaner, and nobody's balancing pound cake in formalwear.
The young woman laughs, relieved.
MIA BROOKS
(making a note)
So. Final guest count by Friday, linen choice today, and I need one decision-maker. Not three cousins and a group chat.
The brother smiles despite himself.
BROTHER
You always this serious around Christmas?
Mia looks up. Just enough to clock the charm. Not enough to invite it.
MIA BROOKS
(pleasantly)
Only when somebody's budget says "intimate" and their wishlist says "ballroom."
The young woman laughs harder. The brother leans in, enjoying this now.
BROTHER
So planners ever get to attend the party, or you just save everybody else's?
A small beat. There's an opening there. Mia closes it with grace.
MIA BROOKS
(back to business)
I attend when the work is done.
She tears off a neatly written checklist and slides it across the table.
MIA BROOKS
You give me these by Friday, and I can make this beautiful.
The young woman takes the list like a lifeline.
BROTHER
(lightly)
And if she doesn't?
MIA BROOKS
Then I make it beautiful under protest.
They laugh. Mia allows herself the smallest smile -- then checks the time, already mentally onto the next thing.
The brother notices. So do we. Mia is good at creating warmth. She just doesn't step inside it.
The meeting has ended. Chairs scrape. Folders close. Holiday flyers and sample swatches are still spread across the table. MIA stands alone now, reorganizing everything into neat stacks with efficient, practiced hands.
BROTHER lingers near the doorway, coat half on, watching her reset the room like she cannot leave a space unfinished.
BROTHER
You know the meeting ended ten minutes ago, right?
MIA BROOKS
(without looking up)
And yet the table is still troubling me.
BROTHER
See, that's new. Most people just leave a mess and call it community.
MIA BROOKS
I prefer a stronger closing strategy.
BROTHER
(grinning)
So even your exit has an agenda.
MIA BROOKS
Good night.
BROTHER
(gentle)
Night, Mia.
She exits into the cold evening without looking back. BROTHER watches the door a beat, then heads the other way.

About the project

Mia Brooks is a gifted, tightly controlled event planner who creates warmth and elegance for everyone but herself. As Christmas lights and community traditions fill the Eastside, Mia’s own apartment remains bare, reflecting how emotionally closed off she has become. In client meetings she is sharp, funny, and impeccably professional, but she shuts down even harmless flirtation and keeps real connection at arm’s length. At her office, her loyal friend Tiffany Hall notices the cracks beneath Mia’s polish, especially when Mia reacts to a call from Kevin Rush, a man who seems to represent an old pattern of disappointment and inconsistency. Tiffany also shares a rumor that the Eastside’s prestigious Melanated Christmas Ball may need a new planner. Though Mia is clearly intrigued, she doubts that talent alone is enough to gain entry into such a legacy event and worries she will never truly be trusted in those circles. Later, at her parents’ Christmas-filled home, Mia is surrounded by easy family love, ritual, and partnership. Watching her parents and her sister Nadia move through their relationships with comfort and familiarity forces Mia to confront what is missing in her own life. In a quiet kitchen conversation, she admits that despite her success, she expected to have built a fuller life by now, not just a flawless schedule. The excerpt ends with Mia exposed in her loneliness, setting up a story about ambition, belonging, and the possibility of love.
